Use proper hand tools to make adjustments. Refer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ise.ncsu.edu\/processes\/equipment\/various-hand-tools\/\">Hand Tools<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/li><li>Hold milling cutters with a cloth to avoid being cut when handling them.<\/li><li>Move the table as far as possible from cutter while setting up work to avoid injuring your hands.<\/li><li>Mill the largest surface first.<\/li><li>Keep hands, brushes, and rags away from the revolving milling cutter.<\/li><li>Use a vacuum, brush or rake to remove cuttings only after the cutters have stopped moving.<\/li><li>Change cutting compounds periodically.<\/li><li>Keep cutters sharpened correctly and in good condition.<\/li><li>Keep working surface clear of scraps, tools, and materials.<\/li><li>Remove cutting tools from the spindle when cleaning the machine.<\/li><li>Keep the floor around the milling machine free of oil and grease.<\/li><li>Use lifting equipment when appropriate to move heavy work to or from milling machines.<\/li><li>Make sure the power is off before changing cutters.<\/li><li>Always stay at the machine when it is in operation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">Before starting the machine, what should you check?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting, make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>all guards are in place;<\/li><li>work is properly secured in place;<\/li><li>bolts used to hold down work clear the tooling;<\/li><li>tooling and supporting pieces are properly tightened in position;<\/li><li>table stops are secured properly;<\/li><li>handles on all feed screws are in neutral;<\/li><li>the table is free of stock, tools or other loose material;<\/li><li>the arbor and arbor support are clear of the work;<\/li><li>the cutter is rotating in the right direction.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"288\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/ise.ncsu.edu\/processes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/01\/milling-machines-01.jpg\" alt=\"Parts of a Milling Machine\" class=\"wp-image-580\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">What should you consider when setting the cutting speed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure that the following factors are considered when setting cutting speed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the material to be machined;<\/li><li>the type of cutter;<\/li><li>the finish required;<\/li><li>the depth of cut;<\/li><li>the rigidity of the machine and workpiece.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">What are some things you should avoid doing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do not wear gloves, rings, watches or loose clothing. Tie back long hair.<\/li><li>Do not attempt to mount, measure or adjust work until the cutter is completely stopped.<\/li><li>Do not use an excessively heavy cut or feed as it can cause the cutter to break. The flying pieces could cause serious injury.<\/li><li>Do not reach over or near a revolving cutter. Keep hands at least 12 in.
