The machine may operate dry or wet, at low or high speed, and in either manual or automatic mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ise.ncsu.edu\/processes\/equipment\/metalworking-machines\/\">Metalworking Machines \u2013 General<\/a>&nbsp;for basic safety tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">What are some basic safety principles to follow?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wear appropriate safety glasses.<\/li><li>Wear hearing protection.<\/li><li>Wear respiratory protection when necessary.<\/li><li>Handle and store wheels as directed by the manufacturer.<\/li><li>Inspect all wheels for possible damage before mounting.<\/li><li>Use the proper blade for the material being cut.<\/li><li>Check machine speed against the maximum safe operating speed marked on the wheel.<\/li><li>Ensure that mounting flanges are equal and the correct diameter (at least 1\/4 of the wheel diameter).<\/li><li>Use mounting blotters when they are supplied with wheels.<\/li><li>Clamp work firmly in place when using non-reinforced cut-off wheels.<\/li><li>Use a properly designed safety guard covering at least one half of the grinding wheel.<\/li><li>Allow mounted wheels to run at operating speed, with guards in place, for one minute before cutting.<\/li><li>Bring wheel into contact with the work without bumping on impact.<\/li><li>Turn off the coolant before stopping the wheel to avoid an out-of-balance condition.<\/li><li>Keep working surface clean of scraps, tools, and materials.<\/li><li>Keep the floor around saw clean and free of oil and grease.<\/li><li>Ensure that the saw has a start\/stop button within easy reach of the operator.<\/li><li>Also, refer to Abrasive Wheels for additional information.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">What should you avoid doing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do not use a cracked wheel or one that has been dropped or damaged.<\/li><li>Do not force a wheel onto the machine or alter the size of the mounting hole.
