SME | NC State ISE
Formerly the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, SME is an international professional organization dedicated to serving the manufacturing community by promoting advanced manufacturing technology and developing a skilled workforce. The objectives of the Chapter are to promote manufacturing through organized effort in study, research, and discussion of the profession and the dissemination of the knowledge thereby gained. The Chapter promotes membership in SME by acquainting the student body with the ideas, purposes, and objectives of SME. Find out more about SME and become a member here!

We conduct the following activities for our students throughout the semester:
Factory Tours
We usually hold a couple of factory tours to neighboring manufacturing facilities each semester that are inclusive of all engineering domains! These usually occur on Fridays from 9 – Noon. Be on the lookout for updates on the tours as the seats are limited.
Information Sessions
As students gear up for their professional careers, we help them get a boost by conducting interactive information sessions. The sessions involve a 30-minute presentation by the company representatives, followed by 90 minutes of personal interactions. Usually, there’s free pizza too!
Manufacturing Design Competitions and Workshops
We also host company professionals to conduct Design for Manufacturing Workshops or Hackathon Challenges such as the “Design for AM” challenge held in 2017, where the students had to design a new 3D printable folding wheel for Mars Rover.
All the work that we do would not be possible without the hard work of our members. And they reap the benefits too. Our student members get to connect and work with industry representatives from various domains, thus building long-lasting professional relationships.
