Bio

Tsung-Yang Chang is a Ph.D. student in industrial engineering at NC State. He previously earned his master’s degree in industrial engineering from NC State. His graduate studies have focused on production systems, supply chain management and operations research.

At NC State, Chang serves as a research assistant. Previously, he worked as a teaching assistant, supporting student learning and course evaluation. His research experience includes simulation, reinforcement learning, machine learning and production system optimization.

Chang also brings industry experience in manufacturing and process improvement. During an internship, he analyzed facility layouts and material handling while applying time studies and 5S methods. His work helped develop improvements that reduced transportation distance within a manufacturing facility.

Additionally, Chang has demonstrated leadership within the ISE graduate student community. In 2026, he received the IISE Lisa Zaken Award for Excellence. The award recognized his academic work and leadership experience with the ISE Graduate Student Association.

Area(s) of Expertise

Chang’s research area is the intersection of supply chain and logistics and system analytic and optimization. He uses operations research, simulation, reinforcement learning and machine learning to improve complex systems. His current work examines inventory strategies for spare parts produced through traditional and additive manufacturing. He studies joint replenishment under uncertain demand and explores algorithms that combine simulation with machine learning. Additionally, his work examines reinforcement learning for simulation optimization.
