Clarence’s Story
Clarence Smith’s connection to the ISE Department began in 1965 when he arrived at NC State as a student. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1969, he began his career with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He returned to NC State in 1978 and served the department for 32 years in teaching, advising and leadership roles.
In addition, Clarence earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering while serving students and industry. He became assistant department head in 1984 and remained a trusted leader for decades. Throughout his career, he advised, mentored and supported more than 4,000 ISE graduates. As a result, his influence reached generations of students and helped shape the department’s culture of excellence.

Students knew Clarence as a dedicated advocate who always made time to help. Likewise, faculty and staff valued his leadership, knowledge and commitment to the department. His focus on student success, academic excellence and personal mentorship left a lasting impact on the ISE community. Today, his legacy continues through the many students and graduates whose lives he helped shape.
Awards and Honors
Clarence Smith received numerous honors for teaching, advising, extension service and professional leadership. These awards included the NC State Outstanding Teacher Award, the Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award and multiple College of Engineering Outstanding Advisor Awards.
In addition, he received national recognition from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, including the Phil Carroll Award and Fellow Award. Furthermore, he was named the 2014 ISE Distinguished Engineering Alumnus. His service extended beyond the university through more than 22 years on the North Carolina State Board of Refrigeration.
