Why are Faculty Survey Results Important?

Faculty survey results play a critical role in the ABET accreditation process because they provide structured, documented evidence of program effectiveness. Specifically, ABET requires programs to demonstrate that students achieve the defined Student Outcomes. Therefore, faculty survey results help verify this achievement through informed academic evaluation.

First, faculty members directly assess student work in assignments, projects and exams. As a result, they are well positioned to judge whether students can solve complex problems, apply design principles and communicate effectively. In addition, faculty survey results add depth to quantitative assessment data. For example, faculty survey results can explain why certain outcomes improved or declined.

Moreover, faculty survey results help determine whether courses align with program objectives and outcomes. If faculty identify weaknesses or gaps, then programs can respond with targeted improvements. For instance, they may revise course content, adjust assessment tools or introduce new learning activities. Consequently, the program demonstrates continuous improvement, which is central to ABET standards.

Furthermore, faculty survey results promote collaboration and shared responsibility. In turn, they encourage discussion about curriculum coherence and instructional effectiveness. Ultimately, documented faculty survey results provide clear evidence during accreditation reviews and demonstrate ongoing commitment to program quality.
