Ed Addison is a Professor of the Practice in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State University, where he teaches graduate courses in artificial intelligence, engineering management, product management, entrepreneurship and managerial finance. Since joining NC State in 2011, he has taught across engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering and business disciplines, helping prepare future leaders to apply technology, innovation and AI to complex business and engineering challenges.
Addison is an artificial intelligence executive, entrepreneur, educator and investor with more than four decades of experience spanning industry, academia, healthcare and venture creation. His work focuses on artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, AI governance, healthcare innovation, drug discovery, engineering design and technology commercialization.
He has founded five technology companies, raised capital for four ventures, and successfully exited three. Throughout his career, he has served as founder, CEO, CTO, board member and strategic advisor to startups, venture capital organizations and large enterprises. His experience spans artificial intelligence, healthcare, biotechnology, software, advanced analytics and information technology.
Prior to academia, Addison held leadership positions with organizations including Westinghouse, Booz Allen Hamilton, Excalibur Technologies, Convera, Inclinix and IQVIA. He has advised more than twenty emerging technology companies and multiple venture capital funds on technology strategy, innovation, commercialization, and growth.
His current activities include applying artificial intelligence to healthcare, drug discovery, engineering systems, and enterprise transformation. He is actively involved in developing AI-driven solutions in biomedical research, real-world evidence, multi-agent systems and next-generation AI architectures. He also serves on the boards and advisory boards of several AI and healthcare technology companies.
Addison was selected as an AI-150 Honoree, recognizing his contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. He has twice been named Entrepreneur of the Year, led companies recognized on the Deloitte Fast 500 and is a frequent speaker on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, healthcare innovation and emerging technologies. His work has included leading AI research initiatives, commercializing advanced technologies and creating new ventures at the intersection of AI and human decision-making.
