Bio

Shakhawath Hossain is a Ph.D. student in NC State’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. He also serves as a graduate teaching assistant. Before coming to NC State, Hossain studied industrial and production engineering at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology in Bangladesh. He earned his bachelor’s degree there before beginning his Ph.D. studies at NC State in 2025.

Previously, Hossain served as treasurer of the ISE Graduate Student Association. He has also earned NC State’s University Graduate Fellowship, Graduate Merit Award and Summer Graduate Merit Award.

Beyond Academics, Shakhawath enjoys football, television series, and a good round of cards.

Area(s) of Expertise

Hossain’s research interests combine operations research, risk and resilience analysis, and machine learning to support data-driven decision-making for complex systems. His current research focuses on coastal resilience and the management of barrier island systems under natural and human-induced uncertainties.

His previous research includes comparing statistical and machine learning models for restaurant demand forecasting in Bangladesh. The study evaluated multiple forecasting approaches to improve forecast accuracy, inventory management, and operational efficiency and was published in PLOS ONE in 2025.
