Bio

Tao Hong serves as the Duke Energy Distinguished Professor and NCEMC Faculty Fellow of Energy Analytics at UNC Charlotte. In addition, he serves as graduate director and research director for the Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Department. Hong also leads several international forecasting and energy organizations. Therefore, he plays an important role in advancing research and innovation within energy forecasting and analytics.

Hong serves as Director at Large for the International Institute of Forecasters and chairs the Global Energy Forecasting Competition. Moreover, he founded and previously chaired the IEEE Working Group on Energy Forecasting. He also founded and chaired the International Institute of Forecasters Section on Water, Energy and Environment.

In addition, Hong serves in editorial leadership roles for several major research journals. These include IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, the International Journal of Forecasting and Solar Energy. Through these positions, Hong supports research development and collaboration across engineering and forecasting fields.

Hong earned multiple graduate degrees from NC State University. He received master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering. In addition, he earned a Ph.D. with co-majors in Operations Research and Electrical Engineering.
