Research Operations Manager

Sam Hernandez is a seasoned engineering professional with a strong background in industrial systems, polymer science and metal additive manufacturing. He currently serves as the Research Operations Manager for Metal Additive Manufacturing at the NC State Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics (CAMAL), where he oversees research initiatives, operations and innovation in advanced metal 3D printing technologies.

Before assuming his current role, Hernandez held multiple positions at North Carolina State University that reflect his steady progression in research and lab management. From January 2023 to June 2024, he managed the university’s Polymer Lab, ensuring smooth laboratory operations and guiding research efforts focused on polymer-based manufacturing processes. Concurrently, from February 2021 to June 2024, he contributed extensively as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at CAMAL, where he gained foundational experience in additive manufacturing and research execution.

Hernandez’s industry experience includes a Field Engineer Internship with UL Solutions in Denver, Colorado, during the summer of 2021. In this role, he was responsible for evaluating compliance variations and test results against UL standards and proposing corrective actions. His earlier experience as an Assistant Technician with Outdoor Lighting and Energy (Bright Concepts, Inc.) further diversified his technical skill set, as he participated in energy-efficient lighting retrofitting projects.

Hernandez brings a unique blend of academic excellence, hands-on technical expertise, and leadership in research operations, making him a valuable contributor to the advancement of additive manufacturing technologies.
