Join us in welcoming Constance Crozier, an assistant professor from Georgia Institute of Technology, as she discusses industrial engineering topics. Alums and friends of the program are always welcome.

Title and Abstract

Decision tools for more flexible electric power grids

This talk focuses on the operation of decarbonized power grids. Renewable energy offers the possibility of substantially decarbonizing the power sector but introduces challenges due to its inherent variability. Although variability can be counteracted with the deployment of energy storage, this talk focuses on “zero cost” methods for offsetting the variability in production. The first half of the talk will focus on the use of demand-side management of new electric loads, focusing particularly on the electrified manufacturing and transport of goods. The second topic will explore how operational changes in network topology can improve system operation.

Biography

Constance Crozier is an assistant professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. She received both her undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oxford in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Before starting at Georgia Tech, she spent time at the UK government in a technical role, and as a postdoc at CU Boulder. Her research focuses on the operation and planning of power systems with large shares of renewable generation — particularly focusing on the mechanisms to increase the flexibility of the system. A large focus of her research is on transport electrification, and she is currently chairing an IEEE PES Task Force investigating the integration of EV charging into the grid.
