RALEIGH – NC State alumni and loyal Wolfpack women’s basketball supporters Gayle and Dwain Lanier have donated a generous $250,000 toward the program’s locker room enhancement plan.
In appreciation of this gift and its commitment to strengthening the Pack, the University’s Board of Trustees has approved naming the upgraded space the Gayle and Dwain Lanier Women’s Basketball Locker Room.
“Our family is extremely appreciative of NC State for enabling success in our careers,” said the Laniers. “For many years, we have been able to give back by providing resources for students in both academics and athletics. We are especially committed to supporting others that are underrepresented. The storied history and current trajectory of our women’s basketball program is worthy of celebration and reinforcement. This is an opportunity to make a difference for this team and future teams and to recognize the significant accomplishments of women student-athletes who excel on and off the court. We are happy to continue being there for what we know will be an incredible journey moving forward.”
The gift is the single largest gift ever made to the Wolfpack women’s basketball program. NC State Athletics is excited about this opportunity to have its women’s basketball student-athletes see a woman’s name in their locker room daily.
“On behalf of the Wolfpack family, I would like to thank Gayle and Dwain Lanier for their tremendous support of women’s basketball and this project,” said Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan. “Gayle and Dwain have already established an incredible legacy with four decades of service and leadership at this University, and we are grateful for the support, energy and spirit that they have invested specifically in our women’s basketball program. The Gayle and Dwain Lanier Women’s Basketball Locker Room will be a transformational space for our student-athletes and will be instrumental in elevating this team for years to come.”
Gayle (Class of 1982) and Dwain (Class of 1979) Lanier have a rich history of helping NC State students pursue their dreams. They previously established the Dwain K. and Gayle S. Lanier Scholarship endowments to help underrepresented students from North Carolina study engineering. They have generously donated to other scholarships and programs across campus.
Gayle received the Watauga Medal – NC State’s highest nonacademic honor – in 2017 after serving on NC State’s Board of Trustees from 2007 through 2015. She is also currently the chair of Wolfpack Women in Philanthropy and is on the Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE) Board of Advisors.
Dwain is a member of the NC State Poole College of Management Accounting Advisory Board and also serves on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Raleigh YMCA.
